Welcome to Skill: National Bureau for Students with Disabilities
We are a national charity promoting opportunities for young people and adults with any kind of impairment, learning difficulty or health condition in post-16 education, training and employment.
How do we do this? We have 2 major areas of work.
Our Policy Team campaigns on behalf of students with disabilities. We listen to the views of students and make sure that the government and key decision-makers are aware of what the most important issues are.
Our Information Service runs a telephone helpline for students and their families. We can give you information and advice on:
applying to further and higher education
funding in further and higher education
getting support for your learning
‘disclosing your disability’ or, explaining your study-support needs
how studying can affect your benefits
getting into work
how the disability discrimination act protects you in education and when you apply for jobs
Check our opening hours and contact details in the Information Service section of this website. You can contact us through our voice number, using typetalk, or directly by textphone.
You are also welcome to send us your questions by email: info@skill.org.uk. We will do our best to answer your query, and send you useful information. We can also put you in contact with other organisations that may be able to help you.
You can find a lot of Skill’s information on this website. Go to the information pages to download and print information booklets for free, or go to the Bookshop to order our priced publications. You can order information from us in alternative formats, for example, large print, audio or Braille.
We are a membership organisation. Find out how to join us in the About Us pages. Apart from our national office in London, we also have offices in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. Find out specialist policy news and information in the Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland pages.
We are working to make our website more accessible. We hope to develop more signed information in future, but because we are charity, this depends on funding. If you have any ideas about how we could improve our website or if you would like to give us feedback, please email: susan@skill.org.uk
